Gratin dauphinois

I got a set of Julia Child TV shows for Christmas, and I watched her make a delicious potato gratin.  The potatoes were sliced extremely finely, then layered with cheese and milk.  I knew I needed to make it.

The recipe was simple:  peel and slice 3 lb. potatoes finely, into 1/8 in. pieces. Boil 1 cup milk.  Grate 1 cup Swiss cheese.

Rub a baking dish with butter and garlic.

Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish.  Top with half the cheese and some pepper and salt.  Layer the rest of the potatoes, then add the rest of the cheese, some more pepper and salt.  Pour in the milk and you're ready to go!  Bake at 425 for 20-30 minutes.

This was delicious with a lovely salad.

I have been watching more Julia Child, and this weekend I'm going to make some chocolate mousse to use up some eggs.  And, you know, just to have some chocolate mousse on hand.  That's how I like to live.
